IPPF Secretariat Restructures

The IPPF Secretariat launched itself yesterday into a journey of transformation to ensure our operations are aligned, and powered to advance our new strategy Come Together (2023-2028).

The biggest shift in the strategy, as reflected in the realignment proposal, is the Federation’s commitment to focus resources on reaching people who are being excluded and marginalised. We will do this by providing quality and people-centred care, moving the sexuality agenda, fostering solidarity for change, and nurturing our Federation.

We have to transform ourselves, as a Secretariat, to better help you implement the transformative strategy you approved last November. It’s taking a hard look at whether we are fit for purpose, where we can improve, and where we must rethink how we are doing things entirely.

Six key principles have guided our approach to change. We will:

  • Transform our approach to MA-facing activities
  • Strengthen our External Facing focus
  • Increase the efficiency of our Internal Facing activities
  • Leverage our unified Secretariat to support localisation and powershifting
  • Embody the change we want to see
  • Invest in key new areas of the strategy and remain within our cost target of 30% of unrestricted income to fund the Secretariat

We anticipate any changes to the Secretariat will be implemented by the end of March 2023, with some external recruitment lingering on for a few weeks more.

During this time we might be a bit slower than usual and there may be a change with who you communicate with. We are committed to briefing you along this journey to ensure your conversation with us continues and remains unbroken.

In the interim, we will continue to work hard to sustain the level of support you have received from the Secretariat, and deeply appreciate your continued partnership and patience as impending changes will likely impact how we all work together. We are optimistic about the way forward as this transformation represents a complete strategic shift that will ensure IPPF is equipped to face the challenges ahead, and it offers a clear pathway toward strengthened MA support and a sustainable future.

In this era of unprecedented change, polarisation, and deepening inequality—action at scale and with purpose is urgent. IPPF will rise to meet the moment. The proposed changes at the Secretariat will better focus our efforts so that we can make a greater contribution toward our collective work in upholding sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice for the communities and countries we live in.

Thank you for your ongoing trust, patience and collaboration.

In Solidarity,

Alvaro
